Deaf students want interpreters, too
The Fresno Bee reports that deaf students at Fresno City College are clamoring for more interpreters, citing the Americans with Disabilities Act. They've held at least one protest.
"We are working on it," Doffoney told The Bee.
Some telling excerpts:
Doffoney said the college counts fewer than three dozen deaf students out of about 1,700 who have disabilities that include blindness, missing limbs and learning difficulties. Yet $300,000 of $800,000 in funds for disabled students goes toward sign-language interpreters, he said. ... Protesting students said they met four weeks ago with Doffoney, who listened and wrote everything down.Thompson said he has not heard from Doffoney since, although he has heard that the college is hiring four additional interpreters.
