VT Disability Coalition Opposition Slows Assisted Suicide Legislative Effort
Quoting from the Rutland (VT) Herald:
MONTPELIER — Legislative leaders do not expect a bill making Vermont the second state to legalize physician-assisted suicide to advance very far during the 2006 legislative session, which starts Tuesday...A recent poll indicates more than 75 percent of Vermonters favor physician-assisted suicide, but lawmakers have never seriously considered the issue which faces opposition from health-care organizations like the Vermont Medical Society, the Vermont State Nurses Association and the Coalition for Disability Rights....
Supporters of assisted suicide would have to start from scratch in 2007, and the Health and Welfare Committee — which will have different members — would again have to approve the measure before it could advance.
