Third-world America
"The help needed for the people in New Orleans is halfway around the world fighting wars based on lies." This sentence, from a letter to the editor in our local paper this morning, says it all.
There is no sense in blogging about what everyone else is already saying. How thin the veneer of the civilization we are so proud of here in the U.S. simply falls away. No supplies, no material goods -- and we are no better than any sharving, cholera-ridden tropical third-world nation -- the kind we may see on TV as we quickly reach for the remote to click over to something more interesting. Now we are them.
Of course nobody knows anything really about "the disabled." They are just part of the masses. They may die, they may not. For sure there's no distinction anymore. Everyone is poor; everyone is desperate. It's not time yet to pontificate. That will come later, and there will be plenty of it. If it gets this ridiculous Bush-league adminstration out of office perhaps that will be some small justice. Right now there is work to do, if only we can figure out how to do it.
Ragged Edge will post any emails we get that seem to be from legit groups. Lots of groups don't seem to use websites but send around emails. We'll post them -- that permalink is http://www.raggededgemagazine.com/drn/hurricaneNOinfo0905.html
The UCP of New Orleans has a website bulletin board that seems to be able to function as a place to leave and receive messages. That's at http://www.ucp.org/ucp_localdsc.cfm/79/12694.
Strange days, indeed.
